Philosophy

Bacon Street believes in the ability of families to meet the needs of their children, and recognizes that research shows clearly that services to assist young people who are affected by substance abuse are more effective when parents are included.

History

With over four decades of experience serving children and families Bacon Street has been recognized for its work by the Virginia Legislature, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the Virginia Association of Drug and Alcohol Programs. The agency has been a leader in the implementation of family-focused models addressing a range of co-occurring disorders among youth. More than 15,000 families have received assistance from Bacon Street, which has remained focused on its core mission to address youth substance on the Virginia Peninsula.

Services

Bacon Street provides services to help families determine the nature and extent of behavioral problems their children may be experiencing. Families engage in a process of exploring new and healthy behaviors, and are provided with opportunities to experience new behavior in their daily lives. Through a variety of formats families work to achieve objectives they establish jointly with Bacon Street clinical staff. Among the services families typically receive are the following.

*Intake/ Assessment (engaging families and measuring the problem)

*Treatment Planning (establishing direction and structure for a process of change)

*Case Management (involving and coordinating other helpers)

*Urine Drug Screening (monitoring the problem)

*Clinical Services (creating opportunities for new behavior)

-Loving Structure for Families (multi-family group)

-“The Social Network” (multi-family group for high functioning autistic youth)

-Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder Education Group (multi-family)

-Family-focused Anger Management Group (multi-family)
